Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Cost Atlas

Switch between what one operation costs and what it buys: US dollars per patient operated, or US dollars per DALY averted. Click a country for both figures, its rank and how it compares with its region.

Equal Earth projection. Every country is drawn at its true relative size, so Africa and South America are no longer shrunk next to Europe and North America.

Source: unpublished analysis (citation to follow on publication). All figures in US dollars, rounded to the nearest dollar. A DALY is one disability-adjusted life year — one year of healthy life; a lower cost per DALY averted means more health gained per dollar spent.

Nine small island states — Cook Islands, French Polynesia, Marshall Islands, New Caledonia, Palau, Samoa, Seychelles, Tonga and Vanuatu — are excluded and shaded solid gray: each expects fewer than 75 newborns with congenital heart disease a year, below the volume at which on-site surgery is cost-effective. Countries and territories without an estimate are hatched. Somaliland is shaded with Somalia and Northern Cyprus with Cyprus, following UN convention. Boundaries: Natural Earth 1:50m; lines on the map do not imply any position on the legal status of any territory.
